How to pay your Council Tax

Council tax is calculated on a daily basis and is payable over ten months starting on 1 April each year. Unless paid by Direct Debit, each monthly instalment is due on the 1st of each month. The council offers a comprehensive range of payment methods.

Direct Debit

The easiest and most cost effective method of paying your Council Tax is by Direct Debit.

There are four payment dates to choose from: 1st, 8th, 15th or 25th of the month.

We offer the following guarantees:

  • We will advise you of the amounts taken on the date agreed before we take the first payment
  • If changes are required, you will be notified at least 14 days in advance
  • You can cancel at any time
  • If an error is made, your Bank/Building Society is responsible for giving you a full and immediate refund.

Plastic swipe card

Payments can be made at any Post Office. Cash, cheques and credit or debit cards can be used. Please contact us to request a swipe card.

Standing Order or Direct BACS payment

Payments must be made in strict accordance with instalment details, and you remain responsible for the administration of this payment method.

Allow seven working days for your payment to reach your Council Tax account and quote your eight digit Council Tax reference number when instructing your Bank/Building Society.

Cheques should be made payable to North Hertfordshire District Council.

Please write your Council Tax reference on the reverse of the cheque. A receipt will not be issued unless specifically requested. Please note post-dated cheques will not be accepted. When a payment counterfoil is attached to a notice, please ensure you use it when making payment by post. The Council cannot accept any payments of cash in the post.
